Clinic-Based vs In-Home ABA: Which Is Right for Your Child?

ABA therapy can happen in a clinic, at home, or both. The therapy itself is the same individualized, play-based approach either way. What changes is the setting, and the setting can make a real difference for your child and your family. Here’s how to think it through.

What clinic-based ABA looks like

At a clinic, your child comes to a space designed for kids: safe, welcoming, and built around play. Therapists work with your child in a structured setting, with a BCBA guiding the plan and skilled team members nearby.

Clinic sessions can be a good fit when your child:

  • Would do well learning in a structured, kid-friendly space alongside skilled therapists
  • Is working on communication, play, or social skills that benefit from being around other children
  • Does better with a clear separation between “therapy place” and home

The clinic can also help families. Some parents appreciate a predictable drop-off and handoff, and the chance to talk with the team in person. The main trade-off is travel: getting to and from sessions several times a week takes time.

Our clinic is at 1224 E Elizabeth St in Fort Collins, open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Learn more about clinic-based ABA at Attain.

What in-home ABA looks like

With in-home ABA, a therapist works with your child at home, in the places where everyday life happens. Your child’s BCBA designs the plan, and sessions are built around real routines: mealtimes, getting dressed, bath time, playing with a brother or sister, winding down at bedtime.

In-home sessions can be a good fit when your child:

  • Needs support with routines that happen at home
  • Would benefit from practicing communication and play with siblings and family
  • Lives too far from a clinic for regular visits, or does better in a familiar setting
  • Is learning skills elsewhere, like at school, that you’d like to see carry over to home

Home also makes it easier for parents and caregivers to be part of therapy. You see what works up close, ask questions in the moment, and learn strategies you can use every day. The trade-offs: home has more distractions, and you’ll need space in your week and your house for sessions. At Attain, a parent or caregiver needs to be home during in-home sessions.

We provide in-home ABA therapy to families anywhere in Colorado. Learn more about in-home ABA at Attain.

Side by side

  • Where skills are learned. Clinic: a structured, kid-friendly space. Home: the real routines and places your child uses every day.
  • Other children. Clinic: more natural chances to be around peers. Home: siblings and family members can join in.
  • Parent involvement. Clinic: handoffs and updates with the team. Home: you can see therapy up close and practice together.
  • Travel. Clinic: you bring your child to sessions. Home: the therapist comes to you.
  • Who leads care. Both: a BCBA designs the plan, reviews progress, and adjusts it when something isn’t working.

Questions to help you decide

  • Where does your child struggle most right now: at home, in groups, or somewhere else?
  • Does your child settle better in familiar places, or do they enjoy new spaces?
  • How far are you from the clinic, and how would regular trips fit with work and school?
  • Do siblings or other caregivers need to learn the same strategies?
  • What does your insurance cover? Some plans treat settings differently, so ask whether in-home and clinic-based ABA are covered the same way.

You may not have to choose just one

Many skills are easier to keep up when they’re practiced in more than one setting. Some families start in one place and add or switch to the other as their child’s needs change. At Attain, you can combine clinic and in-home sessions or switch between them, as long as our Fort Collins clinic is close enough for your family. Being flexible is one of the things we care about most, and your child’s BCBA can talk with you about what makes sense.
